If you have gotten into a car accident, you will most likely be in shock and have several things running through your head. You need to try your best to keep your cool and handle things efficiently. Here is a list of things to take into consideration to help you protect yourself should you get into a car accident.
Are You Hurt?
If you’re injured, your first objective is to go to a hospital right away. Failure to be checked and to follow doctor’s orders can put you at risk to lose anything that you are owed if you were to file a personal injury claim. You will be questioned if you do not handle this while at the scene. If you go home and then go to the doctor and plan to claim personal injury, the claim may be dismissed.
Take pictures of everything that happened at the accident. Make sure to get as many different angles of the damage and the positioning of the cars, as possible. If the cars were in a bad location, obstructing other vehicles, you may have had to move to the side of the road. You can still get photo evidence of the damage that your car and the other driver’s car had sustained. You may need these photos down the road.
Do not admit any type of fault whatsoever. It can be used against you in court. Instead, worry about getting medical assistance and calling your insurance company.
Call A Lawyer
You will need to call a personal injury attorney if you did indeed sustain any type of injury from the accident. Your lawyer will be able to speak with your insurance company and make sure that you will get the maximum amount owed to you.
If the other driver tries to get you to sign any kind of paperwork regarding the accident, refuse. You do not want to sign anything until your attorney has a chance to check it over. You do not want to give the other driver any paperwork, as well. Do not put anything in writing unless it is approved by your lawyer.
Keep copies of everything. You will need paperwork from your doctor, hospital, other medical expenses, and all of your insurance paperwork if you decide you wish to file a personal injury claim. You will need to be able to prove why you should be awarded any money.
